FAQs: maternity photo sessions

What do people buy and what do they do with their pictures?

People get two types of photos; one that they can share with their friends and family (usually fully clothed) and another set that they can enjoy in private (the nudes).

This often breaks down into two different books.

Most people get a book (up to 40 prints in a book) or a box (up to 12 prints in the large box) and a wall portrait.

The very large wall portraits have the greatest impact and, believe it or not, make small spaces feel larger. To see how some people have displayed their artwork, visit the decorating with photography gallery.

When should I schedule my shoot?

I advise six to ten weeks before your due date, but..... Scheduling depends on how your pregnancy is coming along. Schedule earlier if you're slowing down or having multiples.

Schedule any time within that window - or even closer to your due date - if you're feeling great and you like your shape.

What should I wear or bring?

Bring anything you feel comfortable in and LOVE. Pants - jeans (any color), black pants Shirts - big, white, button-down rumpled man's shirt Tanks - anything fitted or stretchy in solid colors (white, black, red, blue...) Avoid patterns, stripes and plaids unless they truly are a big part of your identity. Here's a complete, printable Maternity Portrait Photography Prep Sheet...

What does the photographer provide?

Lots of background colors including white, black, brown, gray, green, pink and cream. Most women opt for white or black, but we can create whatever suits your taste.

How should I prepare for my shoot?

Get a manicure and a pedicure a day or two in advance.

Plan makeup. If your package doesn't include the onsite makeup artist, you'll get the best photos if you do your own makeup or visit a makeup center prior to your shoot.

Call to talk about these options.

Don't wear anything binding to the shoot - you don't want marks on your skin.

What to bring to your shoot

Do you photograph newborns?

Yes! The add-on is only $750. For those maternity portrait clients who book a newborn baby shoot along with any maternity shoot, enjoy this specially priced bonus.

Please note that to take advantage of this special offer, you must book a newborn shoot at the same time as the maternity shoot.

Do you offer any referral incentives?

Personal referrals make up the strongest, most solid way to grow a business and I value your goodwill. I will credit you with $100 towards any presentation item of your choice from prints, memory books to folios or frames.

Do you offer gift certificates?

I offer gift certificates for full and partial portrait sessions printed on 100% cotton paper and beautifully gift-wrapped.

"I wanted to give my daughter something more than just another onesie or a monogrammed blanket. I know she'll cherish these photos forever - and so will her son!"

These images are extremely private. Can I restrict the photographer's use?

This is a common request. I completely understand that you might not want to share these very personal images with the world. Just let me know and I will most certainly respect your privacy.

Can I get a CD or digital files?

Every client receives a CD with all your proofs at 5x7 inches @ 72dpi. This size is perfect for screensavers and emailing to friends and family.

The low-resolution digital files are not dense enough for printing.

If you're interested in acquiring high resolution files, you may purchase groups of retouched digital negatives once your total investment reaches $3,000. Sets of five are $895; the files are 1920 x 2880 pixels.

You may purchase the entire shoot of unretouched (that's righ - icky, raw files), high-resolution files for non-commercial use (that would just be sooooo wrong). Be prepared to sign away that you're cool with this - oh - and I still own the copyright to the images.

Additionally, you'll agree never to sell, distribute in any form existing now or in the future or otherwise financially profit from these images.
