Top ten women I’d like to photograph and why

1. Angelina Jolie

Angelina has such strong on-camera presence. She exhibits that wonderful combination of sex, sophistication and vulnerability. Obviously she is deliciously sexy, but I love how she relaxes into really simple poses and manages to look incredibly devoid of tension. This is REALLY important for creating accessible moments, ones that draw your viewers in.gorgeous angelina jolie

2. Scarlett Johansson

I have wanted to photograph Scarlett Johansson ever since this cover of New York Magazine.

What I like about Scarlett is not just her super curvy shape, but also how innocent she can look at the same time she oozes sex appeal. I love that combination in women.

I also love the porcelain quality of how her skin photographs. Now, Photoshop may have something to do with it, but it’s a huge bonus to start with her perfect, tan-line free base.

3. Maggie Gyllenhaal

I saw the movie Secretary several years ago and have been intrigued by Maggie ever since. Given just that role alone, she’s got to be one of the bravest actresses out there. She steps over lines I can’t even imagine.

I find Maggie to be really appealing because of the calm exterior that contains an extraordinarily complex soul. I suspect Maggie is extremely bright; I love working with women possessing exceptional intelligence because of the subtle effects they’re capable of bringing into the camera.

Further, Maggie has a face that frequently looks sad because of the way the corners of her mouth turn down.

For that quality alone, I would not qualify her as a conventional beauty, however all the other factors make her fascinating.

4. Shakira

Have you seen this girl shake her hips? It’s riveting. You simply can’t look away. This chica has magnetic sex appeal not to be believed.

I saw her live, in-person at the Robin Hood Foundation annual gala a few years ago. I instantly fell in love with her abs and that incredible hair.

In looking through an image bank online, I saw that Shakira has great kindness built into that face. I am drawn to her because of her fearless musical expression and an exhausting work ethic.

5. Julianne Moore

Julianne Moore is one of the more versatile, subtle actresses I pay attention to. And this woman is absolutely fearless when it comes to just plain old getting naked on camera. Body doubles? Uh uh. Forget it. She does it all.

I’m drawn to Julianne because of the shape of her face. I love the beautiful, slightly hollowed planes of her cheeks. I love that she’s almost my age and is still stunning. Julianne would be great to photograph because she has that smooth, collected veneer of a woman who’s got it all together. I have no idea how deep that goes, but she never appears agitated, ruffled or kerfluffled.

I love that about her presence.

6. Madonna

I was 23 when this album cover came out and I have wanted to photograph Madonna ever since. I absolutely love, love, love this Herb Ritts photograph.

Have any of you ever tried to lift you chin into this position? It’s achingly difficult; virtually impossible. Except for Madonna.

Madonna’s drive to create and experiment terrifies me and fascinates me all at once. I think if I were in the same room with her I would turn to stone with fear. Somehow I just can’t imagine her being friendly or kind, but it’s that amazing power she exudes that is so attractive.

I had a young female client in recently who kept setting off my strobes. I mean, they just kept spontaneously firing for no explicable reason! I swear it was her energy – it was baffling. And it had not ever happened before her and it hasn’t happened since. I have a feeling Madonna would do the same thing.

7. Celine Dion

Love her or hate her, she’s a pop sensation.

While Celine is not one of my favorite performers, I freely admit that I find her fascinating. I once saw her give a television interview and found myself dazzled with the way love seemed to be pouring out of every pore of her.

And what was even more fascinating was how it all seemed so genuine. I couldn’t believe how open she was about her desire for children and I was blown away by her bond to her husband.

She was captivating in a way that Madonna is not. Here’s how it would go (I surmise) if she walked into my studio: she would give me a giant hug, look me in the eye and say, “How are you today? Are you having a good one? Anything I can do to make it better?” And I would melt. And I would be in heaven!

8. Tyra Banks

Another one you may love or hate…I am purely and simply bedazzled by Tyra Banks. At the same time, I have profound respect for this extremely hard-working business woman.

She entertains, she even educates a little, but it’s really her incredible work ethic that I find so compelling.

Aside from that, she’s gorgeous. Now if she walked into my studio (she’s so tall she might hit the ceiling), I would imagine she’d do a perfunctory “hello” with a very business-like smile, and then she would pull out her agenda and get right to the list of things to accomplish.

I’d like to photograph Tyra Banks because she is a magician when it comes to turning the required mood off and on. She’s the consummate pro who is in precise control of her craft. How many of us are so able?

9. Masuimi Max

Who, you’re asking? Google this one and you’ll understand.

I photograph a lot of women in the “boudoir” style, but this not-too-tall, very curvy woman represents, for me, the epitome of the burlesque, boudoir figure.

If you visit her site, be a grown-up and be prepared for unfettered nudity, fetish and girl-friendly situations.

My clients ask me all the time, “What makes a good boudoir shot?” The answer is: it’s all about the curves, and more is always better for this style.

Little Masuimi gets around. She clearly has a cult-like following, and it’s clearly well-deserved. I hope one day I’ll get to work with her and Jupiter Moon 3 corsets. That’s how I found her – the two of them are already an item!

10. Charlize Theron

And my last dream subject. I know this may be a bit much on the sexy blonde, and clearly Charlize and Scarlett have some things in common.

That said, I see a gorgeous, elegant sophistication in Charlie, plus some great versatility. I’ve only seen her interviewed once and that was a few years ago with Jay Leno.

She appeals to me to photograph because she’s bright, she’s funny and because she’s on her game. I love her height, her neck length, her wide-set eyes (a fundamental requirement of classical beauty), and those great, straight, non-sloping shoulders.
