I’ve arrived in Aspen, CO

Posted by on Jul 2, 2012 |

Yesterday was a long day. I popped out of bed at 4:29 AM, left the house with Charlie (the Havanese) at 5:19 AM and headed for the airport.

We had a perfectly comfortable flight, Charlie didn’t make a peep, and we arrived on time. Upon arrival, I rented a metallic blue Kia for a month and headed for the mountains.

I drove West on I70 headed for Independence Pass, a route I’ve never done. I did make one nice stop at Idaho Springs at exit 241A. I just couldn’t bypass the Starbucks sign. While sitting on the patio in the glorious Colorado sunshine, I had a nice chat with a cycling couple who were doing an out-and-back on Old Route 40 which parallels I70.

Back on the road, I headed for the turn-off for 91 South. It was a little tough to drive straight through Leadville, but it’s not too far that I can’t go back. It looks depressed. And sad.

Once you make the right hand turn onto US24, the drive is sensational. The scenery is dramatic, the mountains crushingly close. Twin Lakes was shockingly low. Where has all the water gone?Independence Pass, Continental Divide sign

Aspen is gorgeous. I mean, really gorgeous. I haven’t even been here 24 hours, but Charlie is in heaven (there’s a fenced yard for us to play fetch) and the nights cool way down (so I’m in heaven).

Yesterday on our late day walk, I stopped to photograph what I think is a dandelion.
