Thirty four more dead. At least 78 injured. Apparently all of them miners. It’s hard to imagine it’s a fair fight: weaponized police vs. men wielding clubs and machetes. The violence is frightening. In memory of those killed at the Lonmin mine

I regret the loss of nine lives in the recent violence between two rival unions at the Lonmin Marikana platinum mine in South Africa. According to Reuters, violence stems from the “membership turf war between South Africa’s dominant National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the newer Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU).” I wish all involved a speedy and peaceful resolution of their differences.
