A Nantucket Thanksgiving 2012

One week from today I’ll be headed back up to Nantucket for a Nantucket Thanksgiving 2012. Nantucket is the one place in the world where I feel at home.

There is no other place on earth that connects me to the corners of my past; my frustrations, my successes, my triumphs, my losses.

There were years I felt trapped on the Island, not knowing where else to live. I wound my life around the family business, the Reyes Nantucket Lightship Basket business. I started at age 15 when my grandfather retired. Five years after college, I was still weaving away, but I wasn’t happy.

There are years to come that will force me to re-define my relationship to this place. I sold my house, a house that had been in my family for 67 years, this year. I am homeless in a way I’ve never been.

Oh, please. What a first world problem to have.

Yet, I have friends that are like family to me who will always be there. I have history there. A lot of history. Here are some of the images that bring back some of the best memories.
